GLYPH - Art Exhibition

Featuring thirteen artists from the Bay Area and beyond, Glyph embraces a liminal space which allows subconscious connections to reign and centers gut feeling as a source of poetry, mystery, and magic. Collectively, these artists draw from an enigmatic lexicon of symbols, favoring inscrutable familiarity over anything known or quantified. This intuitive language manifests through a varied approach to material translation that underscores, and celebrates, our innate ability to understand things deeply without having to define them in words.

  • Google Calendar ICS

Jimbo Scott is a genre sprawling songwriter that attempts to fill all of the space available in Americana Music. With songs that jump from Country, to Rock, to Folk and Bluegrass to Soul, the he offers a lush demonstration of rich story-telling dripping in premier vocal performance.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area and described by Tahoe Weekly as “Honest Honey-Eyed Americana”, Jimbo Scott casts reflections around the room, flashing from honest self-deprecation to cinematic retrospectives. He was a semi-finalist in the 2025 International Songwriting Competition with his song “Live Free”. He has entertained audiences far and wide including the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, the Kate Wolf Music Festival, The Ten Mile Creek Revival, Whalerock, Strawberry Music Festival, and Salmonfest.

Whether solo or with his progressive Americana band, Jimbo Scott and Yesterday’s Biscuits, Jimbo is a rising force in the West Coast Americana Scene, not to be missed and best to be consumed with reckless abandon.

Alibi LGBTQ April Book Club: "Mona of the Manor" by Armistead Maupin

Please join us to discuss the delightful “Mona of the Manor,” the last installment of Armistead Maupin’s classic “Tales of the City” series on Wednesday, April 8th at 5:30pm, and hosted by Richard May!

Set in the early 1990s, the long-awaited tenth novel in Armistead Maupin’s beloved found family saga, the Tales of the City series, follows the adventures of Mona Ramsey, now the widowed Lady of a glorious old manor in Britain’s golden Cotswolds, and her fabulous adopted son Wilfred, as they come to the aid of an American visitor with a troubling secret.
When Mona Ramsey married Lord Teddy Roughton to secure his visa—allowing him to remain in San Francisco to fulfill his wildest dreams—she never imagined she would, by age 48, be the sole owner of Easley House, Teddy’s grand, romantic British country manor in the UK. She also didn't imagine that she’d need to open the manor’s doors to paying guests to afford the electric bill and repair the leaking roof. Yet somehow she and her young friend Wilfred—whom guests assume is serving as Easley’s charming-but-clumsy butler—and the loopy old gardener Mr. Hargis, are making it work.
This delicate equilibrium is upended when Americans Rhonda and Ernie Blaylock arrive for a weekend vacation at Easley, and Wilfred stumbles onto their terrible secret. Now, instead of being able to focus on the imminent arrival of her old friend Michael Tolliver and beloved parent Anna Madrigal, Mona will need to focus all of her considerable charm, willpower, and wiles—and the help of Wilfred and Mona’s girlfriend Poppy, the town’s postmistress and local calligraphy whiz—to set things right before the Midsummer ceremony when the whole town will descend on Easley’s historic grounds.

Alibi Memoir Book Club: "Raising Hare" by Chloe Dalton

In honor of Earth Day, please join us for April’s Memoir Book Club discussion of “Raising Hare” on Thursday, April 9th at 7pm.

NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • FINALIST FOR THE 2025 WOMEN’S PRIZE • A fascinating meditation on freedom, trust, loss, and our relationship with the natural world, explored through the story of one woman’s unlikely friendship with a wild hare.

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, TIME, The Boston Globe, The Economist, Scientific American, Slate

“Moving. . . . Impart[s] valuable lessons about slowing down and the beauty in the unexpected.”—USA Today

“A perfect testimony to the transformative power of love.”—Margaret Renkl, author of The Comfort of Crows

Imagine you could hold a baby hare and bottle-feed it. Imagine that it lived under your roof and bounded around your bedroom at night, drumming on the duvet cover when it wanted your attention. Imagine that, more than two years later, it still ran in from the fields when you called it and slept in your house for hours on end. For political advisor and speechwriter Chloe Dalton, who spent lockdown deep in the English countryside, far away from her usual busy London life, this became her unexpected reality.

In February 2021, Dalton stumbles upon a newborn hare—a leveret—that had been chased by a dog. Fearing for its life, she brings it home, only to discover how difficult it is to rear a wild hare, most of whom perish in captivity from either shock or starvation. Through trial and error, she learns to feed and care for the leveret with every intention of returning it to the wilderness. Instead, it becomes her constant companion, wandering the fields and woods at night and returning to Dalton’s house by day. Though Dalton feared that the hare would be preyed upon by foxes, weasels, feral cats, raptors, or even people, she never tried to restrict it to the house. Each time the hare leaves, Chloe knows she may never see it again. Yet she also understands that to confine it would be its own kind of death.

Raising Hare chronicles their journey together while also taking a deep dive into the lives and nature of hares, and the way they have been viewed historically in art, literature, and folklore. We witness firsthand the joy at this extraordinary relationship between human and animal, which serves as a reminder that the best things, and most beautiful experiences, arise when we least expect them.

Books are available in the shop, online and ebook, or audio.

Indie After Dark presents: Kristen Ford, with Moosetrout

There’s something happening in small rooms again.
People showing up. Listening. Letting themselves feel something all the way through.

On April 10th, two artists take the stage who don’t hide behind the noise.

Kristen Ford is a globally touring singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose work carries both grit and purpose. From national television appearances to sharing stages with artists like Ani DiFranco, she brings a performance that moves from intimate to explosive without losing its center. Looping, beatboxing, and tearing into electric guitar, she builds something that feels immediate, alive, and impossible to ignore.

Moosetrout opens the night in a different kind of truth. Quieter. Closer. The kind of songs that don’t ask for attention, they earn it. The kind that make a room lean in.

We’re living in a time where everything is loud, fast, disposable.
This isn’t that.

This is a night for original music. For presence. For remembering what it feels like to be in a room with other people and actually connect.

Come be part of it.

DIY Cat Tree: Make your own cat structure!

Make a DIY cat scratching tree using the provided materials and tools. This is a hands-on program where you will create your own structure. Come prepared to tinker and figure. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

This program will be held in our JFK Makerspace. As a makerspace program, the expectation is for participants to take an active role in their creative learning. Creating the cat structure will involve screwing pieces of wood together and gluing carpet and sisal rope. Children over the age of 10 are welcome to participate, but they must come with an individual at least 15 years of age or older. While families are welcome to register, in order to provide materials for as many participants as possible, we are limiting the workshop to one cat structure per household.

Since this is a DIY workshop, participants should feel confident independently using the following:

  • Power drill

  • Screwdriver

  • Rotary cutter

  • Hot glue gun

  • Box cutter

  • Cardboard box cutter

  • Ruler

*With permission, participants are welcome to bring your own parts from home for a customized cat structure. Please speak with the adult librarian or library associate if you would like to do this.

PLEASE NOTE: You will not be permitted to use your own parts without prior confirmation with a staff member. Be sure to make prior arrangements.

Free class, registration required.

Alibi April Book Club: "Hamnet" by Maggie o’Farrell

Please join us on Thursday, April 23rd at 7pm to discuss “Hamnet” by Maggie O’Farrell, the Alibi Book Club ‘s selection for April and Poetry Month. (I’ll admit — I chose this one because it’s been on my list forever, and I wanted to read it before seeing the film!)

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER

The acclaimed author of the Reese’s Book Club pick The Marriage Portrait delivers a deeply moving novel about the death of Shakespeare’s eleven-year-old son, Hamnet, and the years leading up to the production of his great play Hamlet.

“Miraculous. . . . Brilliant. . . . A novel told with the urgency of a whispered prayer—or curse. . . . A richly drawn and intimate portrait of 16th-century English life set against the arrival of one devastating death.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post

England, 1580: The Black Death creeps across the land, an ever-present threat, infecting the healthy, the sick, the old and the young alike. The end of days is near, but life always goes on.

A young Latin tutor—penniless and bullied by a violent father—falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman. Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is just taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Hamnet is mesmerizing, seductive, impossible to put down–a magnificent leap forward from one of our most gifted novelists.

Books are available in the shop, online and ebook, or audio.

This is Soul for today: tight, sophisticated, and up-to-date...a winner" (San Diego Troubadour).

Tori Roze and Johnny Alexander are two members of a larger six piece original funky soul-jazz band called Tori Roze and The Hot Mess from San Diego, CA. The band, of which Alexander and Roze are the primary songwriters, has been nominated for seven San Diego Music Awards including "Best Acoustic Performer," "Best Blues Album," and "Best Pop Album." Tori funnels her musical influence down from childhood favorites Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Ella Fitzgerald, Bjork, Whitney Houston, and musical theatre - bringing forth a uniquely syncopated, clever, interesting, and unmatched blending of audio tapestries.

Alexander, a diverse man of music ranging from The Smiths to jazz and classic rock, is a sound magician inverting standard chord structures and time signatures into beautiful landscapes; his contributions are full of brilliant luminescence. As musical atmospheric chameleons, their desire is to bring forth a deeply emotionally-connected performance to every audience who has the pleasure of seeing them.

Latch Hook Wall Hanging Workshop

Rediscover the cozy, meditative art of latch hooking and create your own textured wall hanging! This beloved craft from the '70s is making a major comeback, and for good reason—it's incredibly satisfying, beginner-friendly, and produces stunning results.

Latch hooking involves tying short strands of yarn onto a grid-like canvas using a special latch hook tool, building up plush, textured fabric row by row. It's rhythmic, relaxing, and perfect for anyone looking for a mindful, hands-on creative practice. Whether you're drawn to its vintage charm or just love the idea of making something soft and beautiful, this workshop will have you hooked (pun intended).

You'll learn the basics of latch hooking and locker hooking techniques, working with hand spun, natural wool and other fibers to create your own unique wall hanging. We'll provide everything you need: a latch hook needle, a locker hook needle, a pattern to follow.

No experience necessary—just bring yourself and prepare for a few hours of zen-like crafting. By the end of the workshop, you'll have a gorgeous textured piece to hang on your wall and the skills to keep creating at home!

Alibi LBTQ May Book Club: Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi

Join host Richard May on Wednesday, May 13th at 5:30 pm for May’s LGBTQ Book Club discussion of “Butter Honey Pig Bread” by Francesca Ekwuyasi.

Finalist, Lambda Literary Award, Governor General's Literary Award, and Amazon Canada First Novel Award; Longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize

Spanning three continents, Butter Honey Pig Bread tells the interconnected stories of three Nigerian women: Kambirinachi and her twin daughters, Kehinde and Taiye. Kambirinachi believes that she is an Ogbanje, or an Abiku, a non-human spirit that plagues a family with misfortune by being born and then dying in childhood to cause a human mother misery. She has made the unnatural choice of staying alive to love her human family but lives in fear of the consequences of her decision.

Kambirinachi and her two daughters become estranged from one another because of a trauma that Kehinde experiences in childhood, which leads her to move away and cut off all contact. She ultimately finds her path as an artist and seeks to raise a family of her own, despite her fear that she won’t be a good mother. Meanwhile, Taiye is plagued by guilt for what her sister suffered and also runs away, attempting to fill the void of that lost relationship with casual flings with women. She eventually discovers a way out of her stifling loneliness through a passion for food and cooking.

But now, after more than a decade of living apart, Taiye and Kehinde have returned home to Lagos. It is here that the three women must face each other and address the wounds of the past if they are to reconcile and move forward.

For readers of African diasporic authors such as Teju Cole and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Butter Honey Pig Bread is a story of choices and their consequences, of motherhood, of the malleable line between the spirit and the mind, of finding new homes and mending old ones, of voracious appetites, of queer love, of friendship, faith, and above all, family.

Meet Linda Rosewood, author of "A Circle Outside"

Please join us Saturday, April 4th at 5pm to welcome author Linda Rosewood and celebrate her debut novel, "A Circle Outside," a subversive comedic novel set in 1980s Santa Cruz!

It’s the early 1980s, and a household of lesbian feminists establish a women-only commune in an ancient Californian redwood forest.

It seems a perfect place to practice the ritual magic that helps them function harmoniously as a group – even if they aren’t all true believers. By getting back to the land, they can also live more as nature intended and give the finger to the Patriarchy.

That doesn’t stop jealousies arising, as Wren, an artist, nurses an unrequited crush on Robin, the land’s extraordinarily generous owner. Further conflict brews as they try to preserve their paradise -- will the "no men on the land" rule be broken?

Warm, funny and harking unashamedly back to a less toxic era, A Circle Outside is a seductive vision of a utopian dream, where the only real magic is self-transformation.

Please join us for a magical afternoon!

Alibi Feminist Book Club: "All Fours" by Miranda July

On Thursday, April 2nd at 6:30, Chelsea and Caroline will lead the discussion of “All Fours” by Miranda July,” April’s Feminist Book Club pick!

A NEW YORK TIMES TOP TEN BOOK OF THE YEAR

A WASHINGTON POST NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR

ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S TOP 10 FICTION BOOKS OF 2024

ONE OF NPR’S “BOOKS WE LOVE” 2024

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY:
THE NEW YORKER ● VOGUE ● FINANCIAL TIMES ● OPRAH DAILY ● VULTURE ● VOX

The New York Times bestselling author returns with an irreverently sexy, tender, hilarious and surprising novel about a woman upending her life

“A frank novel about a midlife awakening, which is funnier and more boldly human than you ever quite expect . . . nothing short of riveting.” —Vogue

“All Fours has spurred a whisper network of women fantasizing about desire and freedom. . . . It’s the talk of every group text.”—The New York Times

“All Fours possessed me. I picked it up and neglected my life until the last page, and then I started begging every woman I know to read it as soon as possible.” —The Cut

A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, checks into a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in an entirely different journey.

Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive.

Books are available in the shop, online and ebook, or audio.
