Paper Moon in Concert

Paper Moon in Concert

Acoustic Jazz with Paper Moon

Musicians usually don’t like being labeled. While fingerstyle guitar suggests folk or classical music and a viola is usually stuck in the middle of a string quartet, add heavy doses of jazz, tangos, Brazillian music, and original compositions to find the one-of-a-kind, uncategorizable duo, Paper Moon.

Katrina Wreede, an award-winning composer, and violist is a tireless proponent of viola in jazz and contemporary music. Jazz historian, Leonard Feather, credited her with having “extemporaneous mastery, rare, perhaps unique, in the annals of the viola.” In addition to her rigorous performing schedule, she also founded and directs Composing Together, which brings professional composers into schools to collaborate with young people in discovering their own creative voices.

Leo Cavanagh, guitarist, composer, and arranger, is the author of two nationally recognized books on guitar technique. His CD of Duke Ellington’s music arranged for viola, cello, and guitar, received acclaim from Athens to Australia.

Paper Moon’s CD, Blue Midnight, includes original compositions, Brazilian choros, Argentine tangos, music by Thelonius Monk, and the Great American Songbook.

Experience the conversation between two master musicians with the spontaneity of jazz and the unique colors and textures of their instruments. in Downtown Vallejo.

Melvin Seals & JGB + Stu Allen on the Waterfront

Mr. Hat Presents an evening with Melvin Seals & JGB with opening set by Stu Allen at the Mare Island Coal Sheds Waterfront Arts Park in Vallejo. All ages welcome, featuring a spacious outdoor promenade with an interactive Burning Man art exhibit, food trucks, beer/wine/soft drinks, local artisan craft vendors on Shakedown, and a light show by Lya's Liquid Lights.

Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B-3 organ, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become "Jam Band Music". From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up.

Melvin and JGB bring an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. John Kadlecik on lead guitar and vocal duties, John-Paul McLean's savory bass, Jeremy Hoenig on the drums and, of course, a heapin' helpin' of the wizard's magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They will take you on an exciting, psychedelic musical journey that will keep you smilin' and dancin'.

Ride the Peace Train For Ukraine

Ride the Peace Train For Ukraine

Join us in support of the Ukrainian people. An estimated 1.5 million people have fled Ukraine for neighboring countries and European officials predict that as many as 7 million could eventually be displaced.

The international humanitarian group is providing food, water, and other items to families fleeing violence in Ukraine.

Doctors Without Borders has been in contact with Ukrainian hospitals that are receiving trauma patients wounded in the fighting. Many hospitals are also facing shortages of supplies, mainly for emergencies, trauma care, and surgery. A recent shipment contained 1,400 cubic feet of supplies, including surgical kits, trauma kits, and basic necessities for intensive care units, emergency rooms, and surgical operating theaters. These supplies are now being sent on to hospitals in the city and other towns further east where they are urgently needed. We are sending additional supplies to the country this week and beyond.

Please be as generous as you can and join the Board of Directors of the Vallejo Center for the Arts and The Empress Theatre in supporting this important cause. You can attend the Ride the Peace Train For Ukraine performance on March 20 at the Empress Theatre.
