The Museum has many hundreds of Naval Artifacts dating back as far as 1814, and a huge historic photo collection on display.
The former Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the first permanent naval installation on the west coast when it was founded in 1854. It built over 500 ships in its 142 year service to the United States before closing in 1996. Today, much of Mare Island's historical artifacts are carefully being preserved by the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation. Housed in Building 46, a 50,000 square foot space built in 1855, the museum is currently open the first and third weekends each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Exhibits include Women at Mare Island, co-sponsored by Soroptimist International of Vallejo. Visitors will also see the diving control panels from the nuclear submarine USS Vallejo, as well as an exhibit honoring the USS California, the only battleship ever built in the western United States. The museum also has a collection of thousands of photographs chronicling the shipyards long and unique history from its founding by Commander David Farragut through its service during the Cold War. Knowledgeable tour guides are available as well an expanded Book & Gift Shop. No admission charge, but a $4.00 donation is requested per person. This unique facility also makes a great venue for special events. 20,000 sq. feet is available for lunches, dinners, meetings, etc. For more information about the Mare Island Museum, please call (707) 280-5742.
