The City of Vallejo's rich history can be viewed by a tour of the city's Heritage and Historic Districts, featuring homes from the 1800's. Located in the heart of the city's historic district is the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum, a great place to start to learn more about Vallejo's unique history including its time as the capital of California. The museum houses two floors of exhibits and information about Vallejo and Mare Island, and even includes a working WWII submarine periscope. The new Mare Island Museum, located in the oldest remaining building
on the former Naval Shipyard, contains hundreds of artifacts chronicling the importance of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and its ship building and repair history from the Civil War through the Cold War.
Vallejo's neighbors also have their own unique historical tales to tell. The Benicia Historical Museum at the Camel Barn, Napa Valley Museum, Travis Air Force Museum, Vacaville Museum, and the Western Railway Museum are all located nearby.
