Downtown Vallejo and its surrounding neighborhoods is where you will find the city’s downtown Arts & Entertainment District as well as Vallejo’s Heritage Home District and the St. Vincent’s Hill Historic District.
The renovated 1912 Empress Theatre anchors the Arts & Entertainment District that also includes art galleries, studios and a variety of shopping experiences. The Vallejo Heritage Home District is one of just a few nationally registered districts west of the Mississippi. Starting downtown on Georgia St. and radiating out, this district contains houses and structures which showcase Vallejo’s rich and varied architectural history. The nearby St. Vincent’s Hill Historic District is a 33-square block area surrounding St. Vincent’s Catholic Church. The historic significance of this district lies in its growth as a workingman’s neighborhood for shipbuilders at the nearby Mare Island Naval Shipyard. A good place to begin any exploration of these areas is the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum, 734 Marin St. in downtown Vallejo.
