On Saturday and Sunday August 14th and 15th the 3rd Annual Mare Faire at the Mare Island will take place at the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve. Highlights include guided outings and self-guided walks and opportunities to paint and photograph. Saturday & Sunday’s activities, 9 am to 7 pm, will include exhibits and displays, slide shows, and details about future plans for an expanded regional park. And on Sunday, August 15th celebrate the 66th Anniversary of the Port Chicago Mutiny, an important event in American History which took place in Vallejo just across from the Straits while men were under the command of the Mare Island Ammunition Depot. The event is FREE and food and beverages available for purchase at the main park headquarters and Visitor Center, Building A-167. Did you know that the Spirit Ship (see image at top of page) is an art tribute dedicated to the workers of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1996? The sculpture, located high on a hill at Mare Island's south end, has "dog tags" for many of the ships built and repaired at Mare Island. |

Did you know that Mare Island is also home to the first naval cemetery in the Pacific, founded in 1858. Among those buried here are three Medal of Honor recipients, 15 crew members of the U.S.S. Boston, who died in an explosion in 1892, and the the grave of Anna Key Turner, daughter of Frances Scott Key. The last interment was authorized in 1921. | |
