Sixty five years ago this summer the California Maritime Academy relocated from Tiburon to Morrow Cove in Vallejo. This California State
University campus trains students for a career in the maritime industry.

Jim Kern, Executive Director for the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum was recently asked to research the origins of the first July 4th Parade in Vallejo. These are his findings: The first July 4th celebration in Vallejo was described in “The History of Solano County” published by Wood, Alley & Co. in 1879. It’s a fairly long description but includes the following: “On July 4, 1853, we find the first celebration of Independence Day, in Vallejo, by a dinner at the Vallejo House [a hotel] and bonfire…. At an early hour Captain Stewart had donned his full uniform and called on all to celebrate the day with a becoming ceremony.” Therefore, this year will mark the 155th July 4th Parade in Vallejo…Happy Birthday, America!
