VALLEJO, CA -- Six Flags Discovery Kingdom begins its landmark 40th year since its founding and second year of its successful integration as Land, Sea and Sky when it opens to the public on March 8 with a season full of the best family entertainment around. Last year’s park transformation included a distinctive name change that better reflected the park’s unique offerings as a wildlife, oceanarium and theme park.
The pinnacle of this season’s offering is the opening this Spring of Tony Hawk’s Big Spin, an ultimate spinning roller coaster based on world-renowned professional skateboarder Tony Hawk – the first new roller coaster for the park in five years.
“We are really excited to bring this caliber of ride to the park,” said Martin Lathrop, park president. “It is first and foremost, a thrill coaster with bursts of unexpected twists and turns that teens and adults love, and secondly, a family coaster that can be enjoyed together. It is our goal to provide high-quality entertainment value in every respect, and with the addition of this very cool coaster to our SKY area, we certainly add to our line-up of entertainment options.”
New highlights this season also include a new bounty-themed sea lion show to debut on opening day, “Pinnipeds of the Caribbean,” which takes guests across the Seven Seas as scallywags abound in this fun-filled adventure starring a cast of fish-loving buccaneers. A brand new bird show, “Bird Drop Inn,” debuts. Set in a small town, a birdwatcher’s beloved bird is stolen by an evil Innkeeper and we follow the comical efforts to retrieve the bird with help from other feathered friends. At Wildlife Theater this Spring, Animalympics makes this a timely show, as guests from the audience “compete” against each other and some athletically-superior animals in this energizing participatory show where everyone comes out a winner.
Throughout the park, guests will notice that the digital revolution has penetrated some unexpected places. Now, guests waiting in ride queue lines for some of the most popular roller coasters will be able to watch mounted plasma televisions to help fill in time. The TVs, airing Six Flags-related content, advertisements and highlights from some of Dick Clark Productions’ greatest shows, is a new feature along with Six Flags Radio, music and content that will play throughout the park, along with ambient Land, Sea and Sky-themed music. Guests with cell phones will have the opportunity to charge their phone batteries at cell phone charging stations located throughout the park. Even a Nintendo Wii Station, where guests can try out several of this popular game console’s software products, is in its second season at the park, after its initial run was deemed a success.
“An average visit to the park is truly an all-day experience,” said Lathrop. “These are just a few conveniences that are part of everyday life that have been incorporated into the park and the guests can choose to use if they want to during the course of their stay.”
Additionally, the park will open popular franchise restaurant, Johnny Rockets, to its LAND area, offering classic American food and even a special Six Flags-branded milkshake that will be available in-park and at all 200+ Johnny Rockets’ locations.
In LAND, see the sheer strength and intelligence of Asian and African elephants as they participate in educational demonstration shows at Tava’s Elephant Encounter, meet Bactrian and Dromedary camels, reticulated giraffe and lions and tigers throughout this exotic animal area. Odin, the white Bengal tiger, owns the town in the one-of-a-kind Odin’s Tiger Splash Show. As one of the only tigers in the world that dives underwater for the public to view, Odin and his trainers show just how important a strong bond and trusting relationship has to be between human and feline.
In SEA, in store for fans of amazing wildlife performers will be a revamped killer whale show, Shouka Celebration, starring Shouka and a return of one of last year’s most popular shows, Merlin’s Island Party, a Caribbean-themed showcase for the park’s talented Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Additionally, guest explorers can enjoy the engaging antics of Pacific walruses at the Walrus Experience, visit the two-acre Ocean Discovery to touch, feed and meet Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, experience the slippery skin of exotic, southern stingrays and catch rare underwater views of South African penguins frolicking in t heir two-tier outdoor rocky pool. At Shark Experience, guests can view a variety of these misunderstood creatures of the deep.
In SKY, the opening last year of the immensely popular kids’ play area, Thomas TownSM, devoted entirely to the characters from the popular Thomas the Tank Engine series proved to be a hit, and joined the park’s other dedicated kids’ areas, Tava’s Jungleland and the LOONEY TUNES Seaport in providing the best of family fun time for youngsters eager for rides their size.
Guests can experience the pulse-pounding, heart-thumping and exhilarating rides that thrill enthusiasts and families alike come to enjoy. Celebrated roller coasters – including the newly improved Medusa and Boomerang, plus Vertical Velocity (V2) and the wooden coaster Roar – offer the best thrill ride experiences in Northern California. New this Spring is the over five-story high, 1,351 feet long Tony Hawk’s Big Spin, which offers twists and turns unlike any other ride at the park.
Extraordinary animal encounters continue to be a draw for many with the park offering rare opportunities to meet animals up-close through a variety of special programs. Guests can feed animals such as lorikeets, sea lions and harbor seals and giraffes and even ride an elephant with the purchase of a Seafari Pass, and new this year is the Backstage Safari, to tour animal areas behind the scenes. Guests can also feed the dolphins at the Dolphin Encounter during scheduled sessions throughout each day for a fee. Through the Dolphin Discovery, Sea Lion Celebration, Sharks in the Dark, and the Trainer for a Day programs, guests can participate in a longer experience with advance reservations.
Guests also have a chance to meet some of the park’s amazing exotic animal ambassadors and talk to animal trainers on the Kingdom Stage located at the entrance as guests enter the park.
“When guests see an animal such as a giraffe up-close, there’s no other experience quite like it,” said Lathrop. “In that respect, we hope that these experiences offer a new appreciation of the wildlife around us.”
