Mare Faire: Celebrate the Original Mare Island
After 3 years of celebrating and honoring all things historical, this year, our Mare Faire is a Nature Fest where you will get a chance to ask all those questions you’ve wondered about, discover, explore and even participate in ‘citizen science’ projects to gather some important information about the Preserve. And, we won’t forget the men who stood up to the U.S. Navy when their safety and their role in service to the Navy was threatened before and after the Port Chicago Explosion.Of the 258 men who initially took action 50 were accused of mutiny and sent to prison for their actions on August 9, 1944 here at the Naval Ammunition Depot. Look for a special display at our Visitors Center. Coal Shed artist studios will also be open. The Mare Island Museum will be open Saturday.
